Hello Spain! This year I'm spending 9 weeks of the winter season (January-March 2017) in the Costa Blanca in search of some winter sun but most of all to regain focus in setting up my design practice. I started off in Alicante but after a week decided to set up base in Torrevieja because it's smaller and cheaper. Alicante has a lot to offer but still had too much of a city vibe for me and I guess leaving London behind for a bit was also about getting away from that fast pace for a while.
So I'm settled in a one bedroom apartment found through airbnb paying half of what a bunk bed at a London hostel per night would cost and the area is pretty decent. My apartment is seconds from the nearest beach Playa de los Locos (beach of the mad, literally translated and so appropriate?) so I can't complain! :) This is my first "work-vacation" and as such I did some preliminary goal setting before setting off. To help me stay focused, I've started a bullet journal and I'm also using Microsoft One Note app to log my daily tasks electronically plus Evernote which I've loved from day one. I find being really organised so liberating!
Finding inspiration hasn't been hard...As I'm a lover of all things textural, I find interesting textures to photograph at the beach, at building sites, on murals, tiled walls, parks etc. I just love going on long walks everyday to explore a new part of town and photograph what attracts my eye. I then use a few of these images in my own digital work as background textures etc.
Here's what I've seen walking around Alicante, Elche and Torrevieja so far:
I'm also looking forward to spending some time in March in Valencia. As a creative it's so important to keep your creativity juices flowing and travel is such a good way to do this. I'm not missing London so much but I am looking forward to the next chapter once I'm back there. For now, the usual winter blues of Blighty are but a distant 2016 memory.
