This is something I’ve been meaning to do for ages...take my phone/camera and venture into as many shops as I possibly can purely to document what’s out there selling right now. It’s easy to lose sight of this when you bury your head in designing every day and there’s just a 2D image in front of you even if you have an incline as to what market you’re aiming to target with your work.
Sure, I can get all the visuals from the comfort of my desk or couch but the shop experience is not comparable to seeing pixels on a computer screen, is it? Plus touching the fabric, seeing how the garment hangs amongst the rest of the merchandise in front of you is a more memorable experience than looking through websites or Pinterest.
Furthermore, I thought this kind of “reporting” could also appeal to anyone outside of the UK as a point of comparison or appreciation. Being a fashion capital, London certainly has much to offer on the retail department and I didn’t appreciate this much before...I’m just not a shopper I guess.
So on this first trip I hit 7 shops including a big department store (Debenhams).
It was great when I started to notice some obvious trends such as dark ground backgrounds and hand rendered drawn flowers especially tropical ones.
